mona d. and the poet

thanks to her kind, real and jet-setting friends anne martin and howard schrott, my dog mona d. had a poem written especially for her by the famous, if not conventional, poet zach houston.

unconventional poets are the best kind. a conventional poet would hardly constitute a poet, no? they shared some info about her with him, and here is the result.

this guys is amazing. be sure to watch the video on the left, and google him if you'd like to know more about him.

a devilish way to learn a lesson

a big shout out to my friend, Howard Schrott, for passing this along:

Rev. Billy Graham's cover photo for
Time magazine is innocent enough in and of itself -- but when you look at it superimposed over the Time logo, it looks like someone drew devil's horns on him.

PAY ATTENTION - This goes for all of you young, brilliant AU minds, too.

a diagnosis:

well, that's it.
i have Parkinson's Law Disease:
what? read about it HERE.
(be sure to scroll down to the "applications of parkinson's law" section)
no wonder i always seem to find myself simultaneously out of time, but with just enough time.
what about YOU?

yep, symptoms include such FORWARD MOVEMENT disorders as creative muscle (brain) rigidity, conceptual tremors, rote task slowness and sometimes total inability to move at all - especially when a deadline will allow for the laws of inertia to kick in.

creative hoax or "whoops"?

either way, it's working. read about it HERE.

designers

Designers are unique. Our days
demand an unusual combination of
qualities: exceptional competence,
creative instincts, intelligence and
savvy. As professionals, we offer
the ability to reason, strategize
and create. We are motivated by
challenge and risk. We have the
power to inspire others-and the
courage to try.

Designers dream on the job.
Nothing is ordinary. We carry a
different definition of important.
We're curious, fragile, resilient,
unpredictable. And in the process
of our work and our lives, we strive
to make things better for the world
around us.

Don't let on, but this job isn't as
glamorous as people make it out to
be. Reality checks are constant. But
we have our moments. Sometimes
frightening, never boring. We face
questions of struggle and doubt,
and suddenly, marvelous times of
clarity and conviction. These are
our secret moments. The moments
that unite us.

Designers take on a daily journey.
We travel through new worlds, new
events, new possibilities. Where will
I go today? What dragons will i
slay? And why would i do anything
else? This is the spirit of our days,
the spirit of our work, the spirit of
our lives. Amazing.

you can't break an idea.

graphic designers, well, you see, we create (on an average day) interesting or ugly or beautiful or tolerable or informative trash.

recyclable, yes, but trash.

on really good days, i guess it could be classified as a smart or intelligent or clever idea.

but have you ever tried to feel the weight of an idea in your hand, or the slow curve of an idea against your skin?

not a rhyme.
not a haiku.
a thought.
a ramble.
perhaps a revelation that i should have been a sculptor.

Christmas spirit

not long ago, i sent out a message asking folks about their personal definitions of "Christmas spirit." for the ones who responded and didn't request not to be posted, your remarks follow in the order i received them. THANKS for replying - i really enjoyed what you had to say. for those of you who didn't respond, well, baaaaaah humbug. maybe next year? here goes:

I would say that a person's true "Christmas spirit" shows when they put every thing that they would normally be doing, planning or thinking about aside and make time to put others first. Traditionally, this is thought of in terms of visiting with family and friends or attending a holiday gathering.
Where is your blog?
Kristy Eppollito

in keeping with my generally antisocial approach to life, Christmas spirit to me is not all the "family and friends and traditions" BS that people fake this time of year. not sure if it's a definition but the only thing that makes me FEEL the Christmas spirit is giving things to total strangers: always give to the bell-ringers outside stores; always "adopt" a child or family (anonymously) and buy gifts for them; always buy those bags of food at the grocery store that go to the food bank or charities. those are the things that make Christmas seem real for me.
Lisa Banes

Christmas Spirit......
giving. warm hearts. smiles. family. worship. thankful. love.
Jamie Ball

Christmas spirit – like any “spirit” isn’t something seen or heard, but Christmas sights and sounds “prompt” the spirit. To me, the spirit is what makes me think a litter longer and deeper about what’s really important:
I wonder if everybody I know and love is OK
I wonder if all the kids will be taken care of this Christmas – and being sad knowing that surely, many won’t
I wonder if we can – or will – do better things, and be better people
David Taylor

Christmas Spirit - the warm feeling of friends- family and the feeling of love and caring that is present this time of year. The joy of giving a special gift, that you picked out for that certain someone and nobody else. Christmas is reaching down deep in your heart and let those feeling come up to the top by wishing a complete stanger - Merry Christmas.
Sam Whitehead

Christmas Spirit is the willingness to help others and give to everyone you love and fellowship with all you love and just having good old fashion fun. And most importantly remembering the reason we have Christmas at all which is simply the birth of Jesus Christ and his purpose on this earth which was to die for our sins. That is what I believe the Christmas Spirit is.
